Research Rationale

Before I begin the planning process with my group in creating a horror trailer, I must first consider a target audience and research to conduct so that I can obtain information that would give me a clear idea on how to make a successful horror movie trailer.

The target audience for my horror trailer will be people from the ages 15 -25; I chose this age range because I have direct contact to people within this age range, therefore I will be able to obtain information from them regarding the things they look for in a horror trailer and what they think makes a successful horror film trailer, this will be extremely helpful for me during the planning process. By choosing a bbfc rating of 15 above, I am able to include themes of violence and threat, which I believe is crucial for a successful horror trailer, as a rating of 12 would affect what I am able to include and may mean that older audiences of 18 and over would not be interested in the film as they may feel that it is for younger audiences and not scary enough. The rating of 15 also means that a wider age range is able to watch because if the trailer was to be rated 18 and over a large amount of the population would not be able to watch it, this would also have an effect on my research as I would find it difficult to find many people in that age range.

The type of research I will conduct includes market and audience research,  for market research I plan on analysing a horror clip, I would do this to pick out what I think is successful and unsuccessful and have an idea of what I would include in my own clip. For audience research I will conduct a poll on twitter as I have access to my target audience, through this poll I will ask horror film trailer related questions to find out what my target audience look for in a trailer, what scares them, their opinion on length, what they think makes a successful horror film trailer, etc. I will also conduct a audience research trailer reaction video for a variety of horror movie trailers, I will then analyse this to see which aspects of the trailer evoked a reaction. To complete the market and audience research successfully, I will need the following, a camera, to film the audience reaction video; I will also need model consent forms for the audience taking part in the reaction video, and my phone to conduct the twitter poll.
